Roles and Responsibilities

Champions responsibilities

  • ensure they are fully aware of the likely affects of the role and its responsibilities on their current job
  • to act as an access point into and out of your organisation – but not necessarily to take on all DV cases
  • to ensure they keep up to date and accessible information on referral sources and support
  • to ensure their colleagues are aware of the Champions scheme, their role in it and how to contact them and where the resource manual is
  • to cascade training in relation to domestic violence and keep a record of those trained
  • ensure information i.e. leaflets and posters are displayed in all areas
  • to attend networking and updating sessions
  • to be open to the idea of being trained to train their colleagues. (Please be aware that not all Champions will be trained to this level.)

Agency and managers responsibilities

It is key that the champion is identified, supported by their agency/organisation as a service level agreement needs to be signed by their line manager in order that we know that professionals are not operating in isolation.

  • to nominate enthusiastic individuals who will take up this role.
  • ensure that adequate time away from their normal role will be given for training and update sessions. Initially training will be 2 days then one month later 1 day.
  • network sessions will be 9am – 1pm and be typically every 9 – 10 weeks
  • to support any on going cascade training to their agency
  • allow that person to be used as an ‘in house’ expert and recognise the impact it may have on that person and their workload
  • ensure that individuals are aware of the extra responsibilities placed on them by assuming the Champions mantel
  • to support and encourage the ‘Champion’ with their new responsibilities.

Domestic Abuse Strategy subgroup responsibilities

The Champions project is being led by Cara Langford, County Domestic Abuse Champions Coordinator .  In the first instance the group should

  • enlist the support of statutory and voluntary agencies i.e. Health, Social and Health Care and housing
  • to encourage each agency to sign up a senior manager who understands and accepts their responsibilities as far as the projects terms of reference are outlined above
  • to coordinate the network
  • arrange training and network meetings
  • to support the Strategy group to source funding  for the continuation of the network
  • assist in the production of resources
  • hold names of all champions
  • evaluate the network and manage the database of Champions.
