National Centre for Domestic Violence
What They Do
Provide fast, free legal advice to victims of domestic violence regardless of their financial status, and including people with no recourse to public funds.
They have a 24-hour emergency service and can get non-molestation orders and/or occupation order within 24 hours. Until they are established they will only be doing non-molestation orders. They will provide support in court for the victim. The service is confidential but the same standards of duty of care and child protection apply.
The only charges payable by the client are made by the court – a process fee of £60 and a fee for serving the order, £40. On occasions the process fee can be waived by the court after a means test. In due course, once the NCDV is established in the Thames Valley, it is expected that there will be no charge for serving the order.
Who Are They?
They are a group of people who do pro bono work for victims of domestic abuse. The NCDV target local law students, solicitors and other people who may have the necessary ability. It is run on the McKenzie Friend initiative.
The advocates do a part time 6-week training course, which enables them to do crisis intervention work in the civil courts.
Who They Will Support?
Any one who is suffering domestic abuse irrespective of gender, age, financial status and ethnicity.
They are able to support non-English speakers. They have language line. They found that many of their advocates spoke more than one language. Many of those went on to have training as interpreters. They have a mini-com service for the hard of hearing.
They support those who have had a recent incident or threat of domestic abuse.
